Papes, Helmick Named Heart Players of the Week

Oskaloosa–Ike Papes (Jr., Elwood, Ill., Sports Management) and Matt Helmick (Jr., Fullerton, Calif., Business Management) both performed exceptionally last week and for their efforts they were named Heart of America Athletic Conference Men’s Volleyball Players of the Week Monday.

Papes was selected as Attacker of the Week for the first time in his career, while Helmick earned his second Setter of the Week laurel (both occurring this season). The duo helped William Penn (12-5, 11-3 Heart) to a perfect 3-0 week, including two wins over top-15 opponents.

Papes began the week with 13 kills on a .435 attack clip against Mount Mercy last Tuesday, while Helmick notched 36 assists. Both players then really excelled last Thursday versus Graceland with Papes posting 20 kills (.500 attack pct.), while Helmick tied a school single-match record with 56 assists.

The pair never let off the accelerator last Friday against Grand View with Papes posting 14 kills on a .367 hitting mark and Helmick assisting 34 times.

For the year, Papes has 178 kills (3.63 per set) on a .268 attack clip, while Helmick has recorded 521 assists (10.42 per set). Papes also has 17 aces, 44 digs, and 27 blocks to his credit, while Helmick has thus far tallied 11 kills, five aces, 80 digs, and 17 blocks.

The weekly awards are the third and fourth of the year for WPU.
