Oskaloosa, Iowa – In the final school board meeting of 2011 the Oskaloosa School Board pressed through a routine agenda in bout 45 minutes Tuesday. The meeting was highlighted by a report by the physical education department as part of the Professional Learning Communities project for the district.
Four members of the district’s physical education department made the presentation of the progress of the department’s goal of “100 percent of students in grades 3 through 12 will meet the health fitness level in all four President’s Fitness Challenge Tests.” Those tests include, sit-ups, push ups, sit and reach and the mile run.
Currently, each grade level is below the target, but the goal is through the entire school year. A sampling showed fifth graders at 35 percent, sixth grade at 20 percent and grades 11-12 at 41 percent. Elementary students meet 15 times each trimester, middle school meets 30 tines per trimester and senior high meets 10 times for physical education and 10 times for health education. Senior high meets two out of three trimesters each school year.
The team meets every other Wednesday to collaborate on the project, exchange ideas and assess progress toward the district goal. Periodic statistics are shared with students and staff to keep all updated on the progress.
