Oskaloosa Parent Teacher Conference Continues
It’s one of those days of reckoning for students, parent-teacher conferences. Down the generations the annual event of parents meeting teachers is but one way to find out the progress of their child. Over more recent years the focus has been towards a parent, teacher work in a cooperative relationship to help the child succeed.
Why do we even need parent teacher conferences? Where did they come from? Over the generations, education of children has gone from the home to the school, leaving a boundary between the teacher and parents. While teachers and parents want only the best for the children, there are at times adversarial sides that develop from parents to teachers and vice a verse. Teachers can see what they believe are problems at home, maybe undernourishment, sickness or health concerns, or other safety concerns that cause the child not to be educated as they should be.
While increasingly we see schools where children are exposed to violence, bullies, a drug culture and things of a sexual nature. Parents are also concerned about increasing encroachment of the government into the home, with the school districts attempting to take more control of the child.
These are reason’s why early parent teacher conferences are vital to a child’s education. More interaction between the school system and teachers and parents with more involvement in the child’s education can help overcome the statistic of children dropping out of school, or under performing.
The school is currently attempting to win a “Power to Bright Future” grant from Clorox. Students, Parents and everyone else is encouraged to sign up and vote daily to help the Oskaloosa Elementary School win. You can find out more, and vote from the page HERE. The grant will help to fund many needed projects around the school, and as of this writing Osky was ranked #103, so we have a lot of clicking ahead of us to win.
Another event that goes along with the parent teacher conferences is the Scholastic Book Fair which allows children and parents to purchase books at rates that are affordable to most. They also help by being able to give back to the school encouraging yet more books and a greater love of reading to the students. The Book Fair will return next spring, so make plansĀ to come visit them,to help your child and help your school.
