One Nation Under God
by Mark Doland – Park Church of Christ
Merry Christmas! Many of us really focus this part of the year on family gatherings, company parties, and church potlucks. It is the time of year that our nation has set aside to remember the birth of the Savior, Jesus Christ. Many of our founders were believers in Christ and acknowledged publicly that they rely on Him.
I can’t help but notice this time of year that with those who have a heightened interest in the Christian faith also come many attacks from those who abhor Christ. I have heard many stories this year that are heartbreaking for those who acknowledge Christ. In Denver, Colorado, no religious floats were allowed in the “holiday parade.” In New York City, Mayor Bloomberg unveiled the “holiday tree.” You don’t dare call it a “Christmas Tree.” All of these expressions of recognizing our Savior is being banned from the public square and schools.
It is not the holiday that they are protesting, it is the concept of a nation that belongs to God. Do people of the Christian faith have the right under the Constitution to celebrate and acknowledge our faith publicly? Absolutely we do! As a matter of fact, we have a duty to! I encourage all believers to proclaim boldly your faith in the One who has saved us. Wear your shirts and other apparel proclaiming your love for Jesus Christ. When the world wants to silence us, we have to speak up! We must remain One Nation, Under God!
