Norwalk girls defeat Oskaloosa 53-36
by Doug DeKock
On paper, the matchup between Oskaloosa and Norwalk was going to be a close game, but on the court it was a different story. The first quarter was exactly what people expected, as Oskaloosa, behind Alexis Westercamp’s scoring, led 11-10 at quarter’s end. Norwalk then threw a defense at Oskaloosa that the Indians were never really able to meet for the rest of the game. Norwalk went into a box, with one defense tightly guarding Westercamp all over the floor, while four other players played a zone. The result left Westercamp rarely getting the ball and unable to score for the rest of the game. The Warriors outscored the Indians 15-4 at the quarter and led 25-15 at the half. Oskaloosa made some adjustments at the half and ran off six straight points, cutting the lead to four. Norwalk junior point guard, Shae Campbell, then hit two three-pointers and Oskaloosa was all but done, trailing 41-25 after three quarters. The fourth quarter was played evenly and Norwalk won, 53-36.
Westercamp started off on fire, scoring nine points, while Marleigh Denberger picked up the slack in the second half, leading Osky in scoring with twelve points and six rebounds. Shallandra Shilling and Lindsey Holmberg each scored six points for Oskaloosa.
The Indians now drop to 2-6 for the year and 0-5 in the conference. Oskaloosa traveled to North Mahaska on Saturday. The Indians will be back in Little Hawkeye Conference playing Tuesday night against top-ranked Pella. Game time is scheduled for 6:15pm.
