No. 6 Statesmen Roll to Dominant Heart Sweep Over Kansas Wesleyan
Oskaloosa–The No. 6 William Penn men’s volleyball team delivered another commanding performance Sunday, sweeping Kansas Wesleyan 3-0 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play.
William Penn (7-2, 4-1 Heart) secured the victory with set scores of 25-17, 25-17, and 25-9 over the Coyotes (2-5, 0-5 Heart). The Statesmen were efficient and relentless, producing attack percentages of .259, .500, and .526 across the three sets, while Kansas Wesleyan managed .083, .167, and -.238.
The opening set featured an early 5-5 tie before the Navy and Gold created separation with a 16-11 advantage. William Penn later used a nine-point surge to take control, followed by another 5-1 burst. Although the teams traded points late, the Statesmen maintained a comfortable cushion to claim the 25-17 win.
The second set followed a similar script, as William Penn found another gear offensively and never allowed the Coyotes to gain traction.
In the third, the Statesmen left no doubt. After building a 9-7 edge, they exploded on a 14-2 run to overwhelm Kansas Wesleyan and close out the match decisively, 25-9.
Overall, William Penn held a 36-24 advantage in kills and posted a blistering .417 team attack percentage compared to the Coyotes’ .025 mark. The Statesmen also capitalized on miscues, forcing a 22-6 edge in attack errors.
Emilio Spanner (Sr., Sint Eustatius, Sports Management) led the squad with 11 kills, while Ben Cemeno-Castillo (Sr., Joliet, Ill., Business Management) followed with eight. Marton Sebestyen (Fr., Gyenesdias, Hungary, Business Management) and Ben Brinkman (So., Appleton, Wis., Sports Management) added seven apiece.
Taylor Brummond (Jr., Winsted, Minn., Sports Management) recorded nine digs, while Cemeno-Castillo and Brady Zell (So., Wales, Wis., Business Management) tallied six each. Zell anchored the offense with 29 assists, and at the net, Cemeno-Castillo contributed five block assists. Brummond served up four aces, while Will Tyler (So., Louisville, Neb., New Media) added three.
“The biggest thing is getting a quick win at home. We are excited to get out with another win and get moving forward to what’s coming next week,” said Head Coach Luke Bentley. “I expect good volleyball against Grand View. It will be a good opportunity to see where the two of us match up.”
