Multiple Events Promise Something For Nearly Everyone

Nelson Pioneer Farm

Oskaloosa, Iowa – If your into tradition, there are a couple of events that will keep you busy this weekend, while those with a more urban character will also find something for themselves as well.

On Saturday, Nelson Pioneer Farm officially opens it’s doors for the 2012 season beginning at 10:00 am with a flag raising, that will be followed by the dedication of the Jackson Family Memorial.

Also at 10:00 will be the installation of the newly conserved Civil War era U.S. flag. The flag was sent to the State Historical Museum for work, and is finding it’s way back home. A “Company Flag”, (meaning one that was not government issued, and probably made by some local community for its own sons to take off to the war with them) it was one of a set of flags that was carried by Company “D” of the 22nd Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment.

At 10:30 to Noon, Civil War exhibit and demonstrations will be happening, with a light lunch available from Noon until 1:00 pm.

1:00 pm will be the dedication of the Barn Quilt Mural and a donation of the log cabin quilt by Quilt Guild. The dedication of the quilts will be followed up by a talk “Covered by Glory: Civil War Era Quilts” by Robin Venter, Exhibits Curator of the Grout Museum.

From 2:30 to 4:00 pm will be more Civil War exhibits and demonstrations.

All day long will feature docents giving guided tours and demonstrations in many of the buildings on the Nelson Pioneer Farm grounds.

Tulip Time has once again arrived to the area. This year will be less colorful than normal, but the festive atmosphere remains intact. Events start on Thursday and run through Saturday. For a complete list of information and events you can visit their site HERE.

One other event of interest, among many others besides the above listed, is the grand opening of the Oskaloosa Urban Park, or skate park as it is often referred as.

On Sunday, May 6, from 2:00 until 4:00 pm, you can join the BMX-Skate Park Committee as they officially greet visitors to the park, with Motive Skate Shop providing a demo and the band Revelation will be providing live music during the two hour event.

The Cattlemen’s Association will have grilled hamburgers and hot dogs available for purchase.

These are just a few of the events taking place in the area this weekend, send us an email with your events to info@oskynews.org.
