MAHASKA COUNTY – Mahaska Health Partnership has named Family Practice Physician Shawn Richmond, MD, the 2015 MHP MVP (Most Valuable Provider).

Dr. Richmond was presented the honor on Tuesday, Dec. 8 at the annual Provider Appreciation Dinner, held at the Peppertree in Oskaloosa. Members of the Provider Satisfaction Team help select the MHP MVP recipient based on several factors, including patient care, employee relations, leadership and hospital engagement.

“We have an exceptional group of healthcare providers at MHP,” MHP CEO Jay Christensen said. “This annual dinner is just one way we say ‘thank you’ to our physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and nurse anesthetists, as well as their families, for all the many hours they devote to caring for others.

“The MVP award is for an outstanding provider who goes above and beyond to live the values of MHP and helps us in accomplishing our healthcare mission,” Christensen explained. “Choosing just one provider to honor from our outstanding Medical Staff is never an easy task.”

According to Christensen, Dr. Richmond has been instrumental in leadership roles throughout MHP. He is an outstanding partner with the physicians who deliver babies at MHP; he participates in multiple work teams, including one to help improve patient satisfaction; he is active with the Medical Executive Committee and Strategic Operations Committee, providing valuable guidance and input; and he is engaged in both the Medical Group and health system activities.

“We are so thankful for the wonderful example of a physician champion that Dr. Richmond exemplifies throughout MHP,” Christensen stressed. “Yet you ask any member of the team here, and they will tell you that what sets Dr. Richmond apart is how much he is truly loved by his patients of all ages.”

A few of the many patient comments MHP has received regarding Dr. Richmond:

“Dr. Richmond is one of my doctors and all three of my kids’ doctor. He is very caring and listens and explains very well.”

“He is the best, very understanding answers all my questions, I would not change him for anything!”

“It’s always a pleasant experience with Dr. Richmond. He is interested in my problems.”

“Dr. Richmond is a great doctor. He is caring, considerate, and friendly and treats the whole family wonderful.”

“Dr Richmond did awesome to make childbirth as comfortable as possible.”

Christensen said Dr. Richmond was also recognized for his community support. “He is a role model of health and wellness in the community and is often seen at the YMCA doing fitness activities, living in a manner that he teaches his patients.

“One committee member who nominated Dr. Richmond spoke of how Dr. Richmond is always willing to jump into action when there is a need, like the time a child had fallen at a football game and Dr. Richmond immediately got up and checked the boy out, speaking to his mother to give her assurance. That’s just who he is; he will help anyone in need.”

Other providers recognized at the dinner include: Newcomer physician – Eric Boyum, MD, psychiatrist; Newcomer mid-level – Jen Scott, ARNP, family practice; Icy Arches – Edward Hirl, MD, for walking to work when it was too icy to get out of his driveway; Game Changer – Eva Sietsema, ARNP, family practice, for her work in getting Medical Group – Walk-In up and running and adapting to a new work environment; and Walk-

In Extraordinaire(s) – Mary Kay Henderson, NP-C, Kim Seda, PA-C, and Tara Hoftiezer, MD, family practice, for keeping walk-in availability running smoothly over the past year.

Also, the Golden Crutch Award was presented to Anne Whitis, MD, and Mark Beers, DPM, for their ability to “fight through the pain of broken bones for the good of the organization.” Both had catastrophic bone breakage and yet continued to come to work (albeit with assisting apparatuses).

And finally, the Dr. Spock Award was presented to General Surgeons Paul Riggs, MD, FACS, and Timothy Breon, MD, FACS, and OB/GYN Specialist Jeffrey Fowler, DO, for their progressive thinking into the other world of robotics and the future of surgery.

Christensen said MHP could not have had another successful year without the partnership, dedication and participation of an outstanding medical staff. “They have the common goal of creating a stronger healthcare system in Mahaska County, and continually collaborate to ensure a strong relationship to meet all of your family’s primary healthcare needs locally. We count ourselves blessed to have each of them as part of the MHP family.”
