Lula May Sheffer

Oskaloosa. Lula May Sheffer, 78, of Oskaloosa, died Thursday, October 21, 2010, at the Mahaska Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. She was born March 31, 1932, at Oskaloosa, the daughter of George “Pete” and Helen Hanna Atchison. She graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1949. On March 31, 1950, she was united in marriage to James Junior Sheffer at Oskaloosa. James died February 5, 1995. Lula May continued her education at the Mahaska Hospital by taking nurses training. She worked for 40 years taking care of the elderly and surgery patients in their homes. She retired in the early 1990’s. She had a passion for caring for children; she cared for many children in her home over the years. She loved raising her daughter, doing crafts, and watching the food network. She enjoyed collecting angels, redbirds, humming birds, and recipe books.

She is survived by her daughter: Pearly Ann Sheffer of Oskaloosa; a special girl: Thelma (& Bryce) VanWyk of Oskaloosa; a sister in law: Ruth Atchison of Hesperia, California; nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews; and special friends: Doris and Junior Chambers.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters: Frances Ann McCombs, Zelma June Carruthers; a brother: George D. Atchison, Jr.; four nephews: Robert Lee McCombs, Don McCombs, John Atchison, and George Atchison, III.

Graveside memorial services and burial for Lula May Sheffer will be held Monday, October 25, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. in the Forest Cemetery at Oskaloosa with Reverend John Allard officiating. For those wishing to attend the service, a procession will form at the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa at 10:00 a.m. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. No visitation is planned. Memorials may be made to the Mahaska Hospice Serenity House.
