April 09, 1927 – December 22, 2012
Oskaloosa, Iowa

Catherine passed away Saturday at Northern Mahaska Nursing and Rehab Center at the age of 85 years, 8 months and 13 days.

Lillie “Catherine” Sheets was born and lived on a farm southwest of Oskaloosa. She went to country school through the eighth grade and then helped work the farm with her mother Cora Sheets and grandmother, uncle and aunt. She also worked with her mother at neighboring farms. As an adult, Catherine attended tax school, which enabled her to work for H & R Block and later in her home doing income tax preparation. Catherine also worked at the Nelson Pioneer Farm and the Public Library and she enjoyed volunteering for the Keomah Genealogical Society. After her retirement, Catherine spent many hours working on her own genealogy and her mother’s diaries. She loved the birds, flowers and her pets – they were her family. She devoted her life to preserving the family farm and her family’s history. She was intent on keeping the land in its natural state. In 2002, she sold most of her farm to the Mahaska Conservation Board and they agreed to keep it in its natural state; it is now known as the Eveland Access Sheets Addition.

Catherine is survived by her cousins: Leslie Sandi Sheets of Idaho; Wanda (Gary) Martin of Oregon; Richard Sheets of Idaho; Peggy (John) Bellinger of Florida and John (Diane) Sheets of New Jersey; and good friends and neighbors: Marion Slings, Pat Resczenko and Rick and Charlotte Caves.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Cora Sheets.

Graveside Service: 10 a.m., Monday morning, December 24, 2012 at Weldon Cemetery southwest of Oskaloosa with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating. Family and friends may gather at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel on Monday by 9 a.m. to form a procession to the cemetery.
Interment: Weldon Cemetery

Memorials may be made to Iowa Hospice.
