Letter to the Editor: What If My Idea Sparks A Better Idea

I am a concerned American. I was born in Southerland, Nebraska and lived in Harlan and Corley Iowa. I now live in Florida. I have thoughts on the floods. I have sent a letter to several government officials and the Army Core of Engineers. My solution may not be the answer but maybe another concerned American may have the solution, but hasn’t come forward because no one listens. What if my idea sparks a better idea. Here is part of my letter.
This year we had floods all over the country, except where we need the water the most. How many farms were ruined when the Army Core of Engineers opened the flood gates? How many homes were lost to floods this year? How many firemen were killed in Arizona in the fires? How many homes have been destroyed in fires in Texas and Arizona and other states? I won’t believe that if we can build a pipeline across Alaska or a tunnel under a river that we can’t figure out a way to create pipelines for water, running from the flood prone states to depots in Arizona and Texas etc. We store oil, why not water. Think of the jobs on every level that would be created. Engineers would have to come up with plans to prove it could be done. You know there would be studies on city, county and state levels to see if it was cost effective. We would need laborers to lay the pipe; restaurant to feed the workers, grocery stores to provide the food for the restaurants and so on.
I don’t see how anyone can feel that oil is more important then water. I won’t believe that farmers, towns and states wouldn’t give up some land for pipelines if it meant their crops and homes wouldn’t be ruined by floods. I think that the flooding states would worry about the tunnel taking from their normal river/water
access. It would have to have some sort of a dam or valve that does not allow water to be purged unless the state allows it. Would you go from a large tunnel, have it split in to smaller underground pipes, and then to water storing facilities/water tanks/retention ponds/ in the towns that need them? Who would control the water shut off so it doesn’t cause a flood there; would there have to be some sort of water treatment plant at the other end and a million other questions to answer. Put these questions before the Army Core of Engineers and the private sector engineers. All the states must work together on this.
Let’s plant the seed and get people thinking. So many are out of work, why can’t we give them something to start working on. This is a starting point. You might be surprised at the feed back you get. I am worried about us as a country. We all have the power to fix us. Isn’t it time that we all worked together to do just that.
We need to have confidence in our leaders. I can’t imagine that many of us do. Give us that confidence back. We need to get back to work. Stop your fighting and trying to one up each other. Put the rulers away. Let’s do this together. Let’s be “United” again.
Sincerely
Von Moye
