Hondonga Picks Up Second Weekly Award

Oskaloosa–Tafara Hondonga (Sr., Aberdeen, S.D., Business Management) successfully executed a busy day and for his efforts he was named Heart of America Athletic Conference Men’s Track Athlete of the Week Monday.

Hondonga won his second award of the year after leading William Penn at both the Grand View Viking Classic and the Drake Relays last Friday.

The senior’s top performance came in a team event as he helped WPU qualify for nationals in the 4×100-meter relay with a provisional standard and winning time of 41.42 seconds at the GVU meet. The Statesmen crew also ran at the Drake Relays and placed 11th in 41.77 seconds.

Individually at the Viking Classic, Hondonga won the 400-meter dash in 48.85 seconds and was second in the 200-meter dash in 22.18 seconds.

Hondonga currently leads the Heart in the 400 and ranks ninth in the 200. William Penn’s 4×1 squad also owns the Heart’s best time this spring.

The award is the fourth for WPU in 2023.
