Helmick Wins National Accolade
Oskaloosa–Matt Helmick (Jr., Fullerton, Calif., Business Management) was an assist machine last week and the national voters took notice as he was named NAIA Men’s Volleyball Setter of the Week Tuesday.
Helmick collected his first national award (second of the year for William Penn) as he guided the Statesmen a 3-0 mark, including tallying two wins over top-15 foes.
The junior started his week with 36 assists (12.0 per set) against Mount Mercy last Tuesday. He then had the most-prolific night of his career, tying the program’s single-match record with 56 assists (14.0 per set) against Graceland last Thursday.
Helmick tacked on 34 more helpers (11.33 per set) versus Grand View last Friday.
Entering this week, Helmick has recorded 521 assists (10.42 per set) in addition to 11 kills, five aces, 80 digs, and 17 blocks.
