by Wade Steinlage
Oskaloosa–Former Statesmen men’s basketball player Jarvis Haywood is the latest cager to sign a professional contract.
Haywood has inked with C.A.M Enrique Soler, a franchise in Spain. His first game will be this Saturday.
Haywood played for the navy and gold the past two years, scoring 803 points in 47 games for a 17.1 career scoring average. He also averaged 4.2 rebounds (196 total) in addition to 71 assists, 40 steals, and 12 blocks, while shooting 50.2% from the field (42.1% 3-PT) and 82.3% at the line. Haywood was a two-time all-Heart of America Athletic Conference selection.
There are currently a handful of former Statesmen fulfilling their professional playing dreams.
Keith Steffeck, who played for William Penn from 2012-2013, may be closest to reaching the NBA, currently suiting up for the Agua Caliente Clippers of the NBA’s G League. In his second year in the G League (also played for Santa Cruz last year), he is averaging 3.4 points and 1.4 rebounds per contest. His best game thus far came on November 3 against Santa Cruz with 12 points (four three-pointers), two rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
Josh Caldwell is also performing well, averaging 22 points and 10.5 rebounds for Bisons Loimaa out of Finland.
