Grinnell Outpaces Knox in High-Scoring Thriller
Grinnell, IA – In a game marked by offensive fireworks, the Grinnell Pioneers edged out the Knox Prairie Fire 107-101 in a high-energy Midwest Conference showdown Tuesday night at Darby Gym. The win boosts Grinnell’s record to 6-2 (1-0 in conference play), while Knox falls to 2-4 (0-1).
Grinnell leaned on standout performances from guard Kai Te Huki, who poured in a game-high 30 points on 8-of-15 shooting, and Harris Dar, whose efficient 24 points on 9-of-10 from the field helped keep the Pioneers ahead in key moments. Te Huki also made a significant impact at the free throw line, going 11-for-14.
The Pioneers showcased their depth, with their bench contributing 68 points to Knox’s 44. John Vincent provided an inside spark with eight points and four rebounds, while Gabe Garcia added 14 points and dished out three assists.
Knox was led by Cole Andrews, who tallied 21 points despite facing tough defensive pressure. Russell Wright chipped in 16 points, and Willie Rogers III added 13, but turnovers proved costly for the Prairie Fire. Grinnell capitalized on Knox’s 31 turnovers, converting them into 35 points, highlighting their fast-break prowess.
The game’s momentum swung decisively in the first half when Grinnell opened a 14-point lead with 7:48 remaining in the period. Knox clawed back to cut the halftime deficit to 55-52, but the Pioneers never relinquished their advantage.
“We knew it would be a battle,” said Grinnell head coach [Name]. “Kai [Te Huki] and Harris [Dar] were phenomenal, and the bench stepped up big time.”
Knox fought valiantly, outscoring Grinnell 64-44 in the paint and winning the second-chance points battle 23-15. Despite their efforts, inconsistency at the three-point line (3-of-18) and free throw struggles (58.5%) hindered their comeback.
Grinnell displayed superior ball movement and defensive pressure, reflected in their 13 steals and 19 points off fast breaks.
