Five Central College students recognized by the Iowa Communication Association
PELLA — Five Central College students were chosen by the Iowa Communication Association Board of Directors to receive the Iowa Communication Association Recognition of Achievement in Speech Communication award.
Darynn Carlock, a senior from Sidney, Iowa, majoring in communication studies and Spanish; Trinh Le, a senior communication studies major from Des Moines, Iowa; Amy Loftus, a senior communication studies major from Elk Grove Village, Ill.; Sara Stephenson, a senior communications studies major from Vinton, Iowa; and Loni Weston, a senior communication studies major from Monroe, Iowa; were all selected.
The board recognizes college students who have completed a required number of credits in speech communication courses with a high level of accomplishment. This award was established to recognize the importance of communication for the workforce.
Students who are recognized at four-year institutions must complete 18 credits with a GPA of at least 3.25 in those courses. Courses which qualify include public speaking, interpersonal communication, intercultural communication, oral interpretation, organizational communication, persuasion, communication ethics, and public relations, among others. In addition, students must have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0.
The Iowa Communication Association is a professional organization whose purpose is to unite those persons with an academic or professional interest in all disciplines of communication and the performing arts at all educational and professional levels in Iowa for the promotion of their mutual interests and the advancement of their common field.
