Every Dog Has Its’ Day
Oskaloosa, Iowa – Every Dog has its’ day, and that day was Sunday at the Southern Iowa Fairgrounds in Oskaloosa, where Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter held it’s 2011 version of Woofstock.
Local vendors had displays showcasing products and services with portions of their proceeds being donated to the Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter.
Mary LaHay of Iowa Voters for Companion Animals held two presentations on the issue of Puppy Mills in Iowa. That group is responsible for bringing Puppy Mills into the public eye and educating the public on the issue.
Admission and parking to Woofstock was free, but activities would “cost” tickets. Some of the various activities from getting a ride around the racetrack in a stock car to spinning for luck would cost anywhere between 1 to 3 tickets each. Tickets were purchased with each costing $1.00 each or you could get 12 of them for $10.00. There was also a raffle that included a G.A.S.S. Driving Experience including $100 in gas, a Nintendo Wii family racing package (Wii console, two controllers, two Wii Wheels for racing, and two racing games), and a 42″ Plasma screen T.V as prizes.
Bandanas were handed out to Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter dogs that had been adopted in the past.
One of the favorites of Woofstock is the radar run. This contest is to find out who’s dog runs the fastest according to the radar gun provided by the Oskaloosa Police Department. This year, Zoey, [who’s human is Jacque Griffin], ran a blistering 20 miles per hour taking home the top prize in the radar run. Zoey is only a year and a half old, so there is plenty of opportunity for her to defend the title.
Ben Johnson and his wife attended Woofstock. “I like it,” Ben says about the fundraiser for SMAS. “I think it’s neat for the community involvement,” he continued. This was his first time to Woofstock and he says that everyone in the family has a dog.
Lindsey Sime, the new director at Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter, said of her first Woofstock, “I really like it. It’s really fun. I really like to see all the people out here. Makes me optimistic about the future seeing that we have so many people supporting us”.
