Eva Joyce Norris, 87, of Oskaloosa, died Tuesday, October 24, 2017, at the MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. She was born June 30, 1930, in Mound City, Missouri, the daughter of Robert R. and LaVena Hodges Bivens.

Eva graduated from Hamburg High School in Hamburg, Iowa.

On July 3, 1949, she was united in marriage to Wilfred Schakel at Hiawatha, Kansas. To this union five children were born, Melvin, Judy, Sharon, Mike, and Robin. Joyce and Wilfred later divorced. On November 27, 1981, she was united in marriage to Kenneth L. Norris at Grinnell, Iowa. Kenneth died on December 10, 1991.

Joyce worked various places throughout her life. She worked as a typist for an attorney, a telephone operator for the telephone company, sales clerk at clothing stores, cream tester in a dairy, and last in housekeeping at Mahaska Hospital.

Joyce enjoyed gardening and bargain hunting at garage sales. She delighted in spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Joyce is survived by her four children: Judy (& Daniel) Olson of Zephyr Hills, Florida, Sharon Allison of Oskaloosa, Mike (& Twila) Schakel of Oskaloosa, and Robin (& Tom) Whitehead of Oskaloosa; eight grandchildren: Rita Van Dyke, Colter Allison, Shannon Ledbetter, Scott Olson, Michael Schakel, Adam Schakel, Joseph Whitehead, and Jennifer Whitehead; ten great grandchildren: Derrick Van Dyke, Bailey Schakel, Lincoln Schakel, Amelia Schakel, Faith Schakel, McKenze McCallum, Jack McCallum, Logan McCallum, Carson Freng, and Tayden Wold; a sister, Teresa Mazzuca of St. Louis, Missouri; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Melvin Schakel; five brothers: Carl Bivens, Max Bivens, Paul Bivens, Gerald Bivens, and Robert Bivens; five sisters: Mae Callen, Eileen Cunningham, Marie May, Mary Lee Sellers, and Louise French.

Funeral services will be held Friday, October 27, 2017, at 2:30 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel with Reverend Bryan Latchaw officiating.
Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation with the family will be at the funeral chapel from 1 p.m. until service time at 2:30 on Friday afternoon to greet friends and relatives.
