Estrada, Patton Win Titles to Pace Statesmen at Waldorf Open
Forest City–Zao Estrada (Fr., Bluffton, S.C., Sociology) and Devin Patton (Jr., Plano, Texas, Business Management) cruised to the top of their respective podiums as the William Penn women’s wrestling team competed at the Waldorf Open Saturday.
Estrada won the 117-pound crown with a 5-0 record that featured four technical falls and one fall. Her pin came in the championship match over Afftynn Stusse of Wartburg in a time of 1:08.
Patton matched Estrada with a 5-0 record, defeating four of her 131-pound weight class foes by technical fall. She wrapped up her day by winning 12-7 over Jumoke Adekoye of Dickinson State.
Kendall Bostelman (Jr., Napoleon, Ohio, Exercise Science) also advanced to the finals at 138 pounds, but came up just short to claim runner-up status. The junior was 3-1 with three technical falls Saturday.
Espie Almazan (Fr., Council Bluffs, Iowa, Political Science) headlined a trio of individuals who finished third. The 138-pounder had the busiest day of any Statesmen wrestler, going 7-1 with five falls.
103-pounder Lily Zapata (Fr., Lewisville, Texas, Sociology) also took bronze as she posted a 5-1 with three falls, while 131-pounder Grecia Martinez (So., Horizon City, Texas, Industrial Engineering) was 5-1 as well en route to her third-place effort, doing so with four falls and one technical fall.
Catherine Steinkamp (Sr., Quincy, Ill., Exercise Science), at 124 pounds, and Grace Gray (Jr., Ankeny, Iowa, New Media), at 180 pounds, were both fifth. Steinkamp accomplished the feat with a 4-2 record that included two technical falls and one fall. Gray won three of her five matches, all by fall.
131-pounder Bronwyn Brenneman (Jr., Parnell, Iowa, Biology) and 145-pounders Naida Abdijanovic (Jr., St. Louis, Mo., Biology) and Alexa Wolf (Fr., Rogers, Ark., Business Management) all had identical outings each member of the trio went 3-2 with two falls and one technical.
Abdijanovic and Wolfe were both one win from placing in the top six.
103-pounder Teya Garner (So., San Antonio, Texas, Biology) pinned one opponent Saturday, while 103-pounder Olivia Atkins (So., St. Peters, Mo., Nursing) and 160-pounder Isabella Harris (Charleston, Tenn., Sociology) picked up a technical fall apiece. 207-pounder Daisy Cabriales (Jr., Richland Hills, Texas, Business Management) had her hand raised once as well.
“We had a pretty good showing; I think we had the highest winning percentage of any team,” Head Coach Jake Kadel said. “I am proud of Devin Patton for digging deep in a tough finals match. Freshmen Lilly Zapata and Espie Almazan also did really well and wrestled all the way back to third. Zao Estrada had one of the most dominant performances of the tournament.”
“Overall, I am really proud of how our women competed today,” Kadel added. “We have a lot of good things to build upon in preparation for our next event.”
Next Up: William Penn takes a week off before traveling to Marshall, Mo. on Friday and Saturday, November 22-23 to compete in the Missouri Valley Open.
