Dorothy was born on April 21, 1923, in Montezuma, Iowa to Lester and Leona Coburn Gruhn. She was raised in the Malcom area and graduated from Malcom High School with the Class of 1940. She moved to Grinnell and worked for the Grinnell Shoe Company and the Grinnell Glove Factory.

On June 2, 1945, she was married to George W. Johnson in Atchison, Kansas. The couple lived in Kellogg and she worked at the Midwest Manufacturing Company for 33 years. The family moved to Grinnell and she worked in the laundry service of Grinnell Regional Medical Center and they also managed the Lakeside Mobile Home Court.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Grinnell. She enjoyed crafts and ceramics, dancing, traveling and playing dominos. She also enjoyed volunteering at the Iowa State Fair, assisting with Windsor Manor activities and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her daughter, Kathy (Steve) Kriegel of Grinnell; her step daughter, Patricia (Neal) Johnson of Grinnell; seven grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and one brother, Ramon Gruhn of Grinnell. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Russ Johnson; one step son, Tom Johnson; one brother, Harold Gruhn; one sister, Lucille Gruhn; one step grandson, Barry Stark; and her sister-in-law, Kay Gruhn.

A memorial fund in her name will be established.
