Deep River. Dennis Roy Meyer, 64 of Deep River passed away Friday, June 3, 2011 at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, Iowa after a brief illness. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 6, 2011 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, rural Victor, Iowa. Visitation will begin after 12:00 p.m. Sunday, June 5, 2011 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma, Iowa with the family present from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Interment will be held at the Golden Rod Cemetery in Deep River, Iowa. Dennis Roy Meyer, son of Roy Orville and Ilene Estella (Niebuhr) Meyer was born on May 16, 1947 in Williamsburg, Iowa. Raised on the family farm. He attended St. John’s Lutheran School Rural Victor. He graduated from Deep River Millersburg High School in 1965. Joined in the U.S. Army in 1966 and served state side and was wounded in Vietnam. Dennis was honorably discharged after receiving two Silver Stars, a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart and nominated for the Congressional Medal of Honor. Dennis and Alana (Icenbice) Meyer were married on September 7, 1969 at St. John’s Lutheran Church at rural Victor. Denny was hired at Amana Refrigeration and worked for 34 years in many positions while also helping his family’s farms. He loved farming, mowing, fishing, his family and time spending with friends. He loved his family, God and Country. He served in many wars foreign and domestic.
Denny will be remembered as a larger than life father figure and hero to his daughters. He was a man that was loved and was a selfless, wonderful provider and caring husband for over 41 years.
His memory will be cherished by his mother, Ilene Meyer of Deep River, his wife, Alana, of Deep River, daughter Angela (Billy) George of Deep River, daughter Monica (Todd Wali) Meyer of Ladora, his grandsons Sydney Allen George and Joseph Ambrose George; his brother Willard (Mary) Meyer of Deep River, brother Don R. (Julie) Meyer of Deep River, his sister Susan (David) Stevenson of Deep River, several nieces and nephews, and many friends.
Dennis is preceded in death by his father and his daughter Danielle I. Meyer.
