Day Of Caring Proves It’s More Than Just A Name

140 individuals took part in the 2013 Day of Caring.

Oskaloosa, Iowa – With paintbrushes, brooms and rakes in hand, many area residents and students joined the United Way of Mahaska County in their 6th annual ‘Day of Caring’.

With fourteen projects underway on Thursday, community members could be found at a wide range of locations, including the bandstand, Nelson Pioneer Farm, Kids Korner, and individuals homes.

Painting, weed pulling, mowing and raking leaves were just a few of the outdoor activities. At Nelson Pioneer Farm, students from William Penn University helped to wipe down displays as well, all in preparation for the Fall Festival.

Some small home repairs were also accomplished, including some painting. Even the bandstand on the square in Oskaloosa received a fresh coat of paint, as did a storage shed at the Lacey Complex.

“I think overall we’re just pleased about the weather and it is a gorgeous day, and I think this year, we have a lot of projects people are really going to notice,” said Amy Langdon, Executive Director at the United Way of Mahaska County.

Last year’s weather was less cooperative, with rain causing the cancellation of many projects, and driving volunteers indoors.

Lindsey Sheets of Mahaska County United Way said that 140 individuals volunteered their time and talents during the day. “Every year it’s been a great success.”

“It couldn’t have been done without the people of Osky being so willing to put in the effort and the time,” added Lindsey Sheets. “The fact that there are 140 people from this area that are so willing to go do whatever needs to be done. It’s amazing.”
