Oskaloosa, Iowa – How do you turn a rivalry into an opportunity to help others? A few local businesses have been able to accomplish just that this past week with tailgate fun hosted at their businesses.

On Monday, Hawkeye Real Estate hosted a tailgater in front of their downtown location. Chris Roach and Lori Oaks were the masterminds behind getting the days festivities off the ground. The hope was to help raise funds for Mahaska County United Way. “We’re always looking for ways to raise money for United Way,” said Chris Roach. Food was served and fans deposited money according to the team they support most.

In an office as large as Hawkeye Real Estate, there are plenty of fans on both sides, and the Iowa and Iowa Sate fans each have a good time with the yearly showdown. “It’s always good natured,” says Roach. Roach is a 1998 graduate of the College of Business at Iowa State University.

On Wednesday and Thursday, Cyclone and Hawekeye fans could be found at Mahaska Drug. There, they also took a freewill donation, with each fan base being able to show their support by gifting money in an appropriately decorated bag. Their goal was to help an individual.

Mahaska Drug was joined by #GBNB and the Tyler Sash Foundation in helping to raise funds to help Micah Leaverton. Leaverton, who is a 2012 graduate of Oskaloosa, was injured in a motorcycle accident at the end of July.

Besides the proceeds raised from the CyHawk rivalry, funds are being raised by the sale of special edition Pray4Micah writstbands. The wristbands are also available at Smokey Row in Oskaloosa and Eddyville Lumber.

Tonight, you can join Mahaska County Extension at the Southern Iowa Fairgrounds for a Tailgate Caravan. They will be there from 4 to 7pm with prizes being awarded for the Most Spirited Group and the Most Creative Person. There will be a meal for a free will donation, or you can pack in your favorite grill and food.
