Courthouse Roof May See New Tiles In Near Future
Oskaloosa, Iowa – The Mahaska County Board of Supervisors met on Monday for their second scheduled meeting of the month.
The roof of the Mahaska County Courthouse was once again the center of discussion for the meeting, as the Supervisors set about a course of action in getting it repaired. The roof was damaged back in April of this year during a severe thunderstorm.
Mike Vander Molen made the motion to “authorize Terracon to provide bid documents and contract documents for re-adhering the tile on the roof with screws and with adhesive, and with two options: with hurricane clips and without.”
Currently the roof tile are held down by 1 3/4 inch ring-shank copper nails, but the screws were found to have a much better adhesion property over the current fastener.
Once those documents arrive from Terracon, the bid letting will then begin. The County also has to find a supply of tile to be used in the project. The total cost of the project is expected to exceed $100,000.
The board also heard from MCARD Director Deann De Groot about current activities and directives within that organization. Mahaska County Supervisor Mark Doland is serving as interm chair while a new one is selected.
The County Attorney Office had one payroll change there with an added assistant to the office.
The county also approved the 28E agreements with University Park and Eddyville for law enforcement protection, from the Mahaska County Sheriffs Office, within those city limits.
The Supervisors also adopted the ordinances code book, which has to be updated every five years according to state law. With the lot size and setback ordinances now passed in the previous meeting, the new code book will be up-to-date. “No substantive changes,” said Mahaska County Supervisors Chairman Mike Vander Molen. The adoption of the code book came down to a 2-1 vote with Gordy being the sole no vote.
