Central’s Miller, Ziskovsky win league track honors
PELLA—Central College junior pentathlete Ethan Miller (Seymour) has been named the Iowa Conference male athlete of the week.
Meanwhile senior pentathlete Jill Ziskovsky (Dallas Center, Dallas Center-Grimes HS) was tabbed as the field athlete of the week for women’s indoor track and field.
Miller, who also earned field athlete of the week honors last week, posted the highest NCAA Division III pentathlon score of the season and shattered the school record with 3,876 points at the Darren Young Classic indoor track and field meet at Grinnell College Friday. His point total tops the automatic qualifying standard for the NCAA Division III Championships March 11-12 in Columbus, Ohio, and betters the previous school record of 3,801 points set by all-American teammate Kurtis Brondyke (senior, Clinton). Brondyke finished second Friday with 3,759 points.
In the 10-athlete field Miller was first in the 55-meter hurdles (7.87 seconds), first in the long jump (23 feet, 6.25 inches), third in the shot put (39-0.25), first in the high jump (a career-best 6-8.25) and fourth in the 1,000-meters (2:54.92).
Miller received the league honor last week after topping the automatic qualifying mark for the NCAA Division III Championships on his first jump of the year in the long jump, leaping 23 feet, 11.5 inches as the Wartburg Select meet in Waverly. He’s also qualified for the national meet in the high jump.
A three-time all-America honoree, this is the fourth time Miller has received the field athlete of the week award. He was noted twice last year, April 5 and May 17, when he was also selected the male athlete of the week. Miller was named the league’s 2010 indoor MVP before sharing outdoor MVP honors with Brondyke.
Ziskovsky also wins pentathlon–Ziskovsky topped the NCAA provisional qualifying standard in the women’s pentathlon at Grinnell Friday with a personal best 3,276 points, which ranks fourth in school history.
In a field of eight, Ziskovsky was fourth in the 55-meter hurdles (9.09 seconds), fourth in the high jump (4-11.75), third in the shot put (30-1), first in the long jump (17-3.5) and first in the 800 (2:24.05).
It’s the second time Ziskovsky has received the league’s field athlete of the week honor. She was tabbed April 18 last year during the outdoor season. Ziskovsky is a two-time all-America honoree.
Both squads travel to Cedar Falls Friday for the UNI-Dome Open.
