Central women’s soccer team closes out with victory
PELLA — Ending its season with a trio of goals, the Central College women’s soccer team downed Buena Vista University 3-0 Tuesday afternoon.
Central wraps up its 2019 campaign with a 6-10-2 record (1-6-1 conference). Buena Vista finishes at 2-15-0 (0-8-0 conference)
“It was nice to get win,” coach Mike Kobylinski said. “I thought we played some good Central College women’s soccer in the second half.”
Senior striker Erin Manion (Delafield, Wis., Kettle Moraine HS) scored her 46th and final career goal 20 seconds into the second half. She finishes third in career goals and second in points with 111 (46 goals, 19 assists). Classmate Mikaela Erickson (senior, Spring Lake, Mich., Western Michigan Christian HS) got the assist.
“Erin is a special player and a special person,” Kobylinski said. “We’re certainly going to miss her but I was happy she was able to tuck one away.”
The first tally of the match went to senior midfielder Elise Askelsen (Indianola) with a strike from outside the box at the 4:08 mark.
“She gives so much to this team that doesn’t necessarily go on the stat sheet,” Kobylinski said. “I couldn’t be happier for Elise to knock in a beautiful goal.”
Bridget Lynch (freshman, midfielder, Northglenn, Colo., Jefferson Academy) netted the first goal of her career in the 61st minute to finalize the score.
“She’s played multiple positions and is a special player,” Kobylinski said. “We’re excited to have her in the red and white for three more years.”
In addition to the shut out, the Dutch defense held the Beavers without a shot attempt. Junior Taylor Golt (Crystal Lake, Ill., Prairie Ridge HS) picked up the win in goal.
“It was good to keep a goose egg on the scoreboard,” Kobylinski said.
In addition to Askelsen, Erickson and Manion, seniors Hannah Ogren (defender, Gilbert, Ariz.), Gabriellie Lillie (defender, Burlington, Notre Dame HS) and Stephanie Noble (senior, Huntley, Ill.) played their final games. The seventh senior, Baylee Kivett (midfielder, Grinnell), has been out with an injury since September.
“We’re certainly going to miss this senior class,” Kobylinski said. “They’ve been main contributors to our program for the last four years.”
