Central College SWE to perform Sunday concert March 6

PELLA — Central College’s Symphonic Wind Ensemble (SWE) and the Central Iowa Wind Ensemble will perform together for Central’s Sunday Concert Series. The concert will begin at 4 p.m. in Douwstra Auditorium Sunday, March 6. The event is free and open to the public.

SWE will perform “American Overture” by Joseph Wilcox Jenkins; “Andante and Tranquillo” by Samuel Barber with guest conductor Evan Feldman, who previously taught in Central’s music department; “Concertino for Flute and Band” by Cecile Chaminade, featuring guest soloist and flute instructor Claudia Anderson; and “March from Symphonic Metamorphosis” by Paul Hindemith.

The Central Iowa Wind Ensemble, an adult group based in Des Moines, will perform “Symphony is B-Flat” by Paul Hindemith; “October” by Eric Whitacre; “Folk Dances” by Dmitri Shostakovich with guest conductor Feldman; and “La Pequena Habana” by Todd Malicoate.

Together, the two groups will play “Guys and Dolls” by Frank Loesser and “Midway March” by John Williams.

Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the Central Iowa Wind Ensemble are under the direction of Mitchell Lutch, director of bands and assistant professor of music. SWE is a select instrumental ensemble featuring over 30 performers. Feldman is a former Central faculty member and founder of the Central Iowa Wind Ensemble.
