Osky News is completely free to the reader, but is not free to operate. We have started to gain some advertisers, and we appreciate every last one of them that has helped us continue to grow. In that 6 months, with their help we have covered floods, fires, politics, sports, and nearly every event we are aware of or have the capability to attend. Public safety is also one of our primary focuses here at Osky News. When severe weather is approaching we have the capability to help alert our community to hazards and dangers nearly instantly.
Osky News sits ready to continue serving Oskaloosa and Mahaska County. We will be part of our community as long as we are able, serving our neighbors.
Without our volunteer staff, and supporters so far, none of this would have been possible, and I thank them all for their countless hours of dedication and support.
There are many needs and expenses to those that help provide the service. We are looking to get a couple of digital SLR camera’s and some semi-professional video camera’s to help bring more coverage and better images to the community. (If you have older camera’s you’re willing to part with, that is also very helpful.) Currently we use basic point and shoot camera’s and normal home video camera’s for video purposes. With the constant use, some of them are quickly needing replaced. Simple things like gas money and maintenance of vehicles, plus hopes of getting mobile hot spots for on scene reports to the public for even faster response.
I have thought about making this post for some time. We don’t often mention to people or organizations about sending in donations or money. This won’t be a common thing, but since we don’t bombard people with the nagging of paying for a subscription or nagging to subscribe to our news source and we don’t lock content away for “premium” users; we find it necessary, on a rare occasion like this, to present the opportunity for others to help out with money, and in this case, other items needed to help Osky News grow.
