Brindley Perfect in Skeet, WPU Takes Third at Midland Invitational

Lincoln, Neb.–The William Penn shotgun sports team came up a bit short of a huge crown as it faced off against some of the top squads in the region at the Midland Invitational last Friday through Sunday.

The Statesmen finished third out of 11 teams with 1,387 targets, while NCAA Division II Fort Hays State (Colo.) won the title at 1,427. Concordia (Neb.) was second with 1,399 targets.

Dominick Ver Meer (Jr., Pella, Iowa) guided the navy and gold with a score of 282-for-300, while Colten Uitermarkt (Sr., Otley, Iowa, Master’s of Organizational Leadership) was right behind him at 281-for-300.

Mathew Brindley (So., Earlham, Iowa, Industrial Technology), at 276-for-300, was third overall. He also made NCSSAA history by earning the first NCSSAA medal for shooting a perfect 100-for-100 in America Skeet.

Bryon Baca (Sr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Hunter Block (Jr., Eldridge, Iowa, Business Management) concluded WPU’s scoring with identical scores of 274-for-300.

“Last weekend was definitely a huge learning moment for us,” Head Coach Steve Heaton said. “The team showed some nerves going against some of the biggest programs around, but still managed a third-place finish. We did not compete to our potential, but we learned a lot and corrected that in practice.”

“We are a very talented squad that is coming together and learning how to push and help each other,” Heaton added. Although we did not win a single disciple, we still placed third overall, which shows that we are very deep all the way around and are learning from each other.”

Next Up: William Penn travels to Cedar Falls Saturday and Sunday to compete in the Wartburg Invitational.
