Bonnie Sedrel, 88, of Oskaloosa, died Tuesday, May 26, 2020, at the MHP Hospital in Oskaloosa. She was born February 17, 1932, in Oskaloosa, the daughter of Albert and Sarah Luella (McCombs) Sytsma.

Bonnie graduated from Rose Hill High School with the Class of 1949. She was the Salutatorian and President of her class.

On February 1, 1950 she was united in marriage to Robert “Bob” Sedrel in Oskaloosa. To this union two children were born, Tony and Christy. Robert passed away on March 24, 2017.

Early on Bonnie worked at various places in Oskaloosa, including (The Old) Continental Overall Factory and later Superior Ideal in Oskaloosa. She later worked for Sears in Oskaloosa, until eventually owning and operating the store. In the mid 1990’s Sears Corporate ended the merchant ownership program and purchased the store from Bonnie.

Bonnie was a member of the Central United Methodist Church and Kings Daughter’s. Bonnie was an active and involved mother. She served as a Sunday School teacher and a Scout leader when her children were young.

Her family includes her two children and their spouses, Tony & Kathy Sedrel of Oskaloosa and Christy & Mike Lathrop of Nashville, Tennessee; four grandsons: Jim (& Vanessa) Sedrel, John (& Lacey) Sedrel, Ben (& Cara Krueger) Lathrop, and Tom (& Jami) Lathrop; four great grandchildren: Robert, Lena, and Hensley Sedrel and Tatum Jane Sedrel; a brother-in-law, Bud Alexander of Indianola; her sister-in-law, Mary Lou Sedrel of Oskaloosa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Sedrel; her parents; 4 sisters: Isabelle Alexander, Evelyn Blomgren, Eva Dolores Gerard and Bernice Slycord; and 5 brothers: Albert Sytsma, Rodney Sytsma, Dannie Sytsma, Forrest Sytsma and Stanley Sytsma.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, May 30, 2020, at 10:30 a.m. in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating.
According to the rules put in place by the Iowa Department of Public Health, proper social distancing and reasonable personal protective equipment is advised for attending a religious public event.
The graveside service will be live streamed at the funeral home’s YouTube Channel for those wishing to support the family from a distance. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Open visitation with a rolling limit of 10 in the building at any given time will begin on Friday after 4 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel until 7 p.m. Friday evening. The family will not be present for visitation.
Memorials may be made to Mahaska Chamber Christmas Light Fund.
