Bernice Hasselman

Bernice Hasselman, 99, of Oskaloosa, died Tuesday, February 21, 2012, at the Oskaloosa Care Center in Oskaloosa. She was born November 23, 1912, at Evans, Iowa, the daughter of Alfred Ira and Sarah Elizabeth Woodcock Kaskadden. She graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1929. She earned her teaching certificate from William Penn College. She taught country school in Mahaska County. On March 5, 1938, she was united in marriage to Eugene E. Hasselman at Atlantic, Iowa; he died February 12, 1988. Following their marriage Bernice farmed alongside Eugene on his family’s farm near New Sharon. In 1945, they moved to Oskaloosa. She was a lifelong resident of Oskaloosa. She enjoyed her country house; she took great pride in making it “home”. She was a member of the Central United Methodist Church, where she volunteered and was active in King’s Daughters. She was also active in the Mahaska Quilters Guild and the West Center Women’s Club. She enjoyed cooking, quilting and flower gardens, she also enjoyed following Oskaloosa Athletics and the Chicago Cubs. She will be remembered as a wonderful and caring mother and grandmother that delighted in her grandchildren. Her home was always open, she considered all children that visited her grandchildren.

Her family includes her three children: Janet (& Charles) McBeth of Ottumwa, Beth Hasselman of Coralville, and Elvin (& Terri) Hasselman of Ames; three grandchildren: Christopher (& Michelle) Hasselman, Heather (& Lynn) Hughes, and Carolyn McBeth; seven great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson: Stephen McBeth; two brothers: Frank Kaskadden and Alfred Kaskadden; and two sisters: Margaret Cruzen and Ruth Ennis.

Open visitation will begin Thursday after 10 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa. No family visitation is planned. A private family committal will be held in the Forest Cemetery. There will be a memorial service at a later date. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Oskaloosa Care Center.
