Arroyo Homers Way to Heart Recognition
Oskaloosa–Abraham Arroyo (So., Camuy, P.R., Wellness and Recreation) sprayed the ball all over the park and a few times out of it and his efforts were rewarded as he was chosen as Heart of America Athletic Conference Baseball Player of the Week Monday.
Arroyo won his first career laurel (first award for the Statesmen this year as well) after leading WPU to a high-scoring 2-2 series against Graceland.
The sophomore hit .500 (8-for-16) versus the Yellowjackets, including one double, one triple, and three home runs. He drove in 14 runs and scored eight times himself. Arroyo owned a 1.250 slugging percentage and a .579 on-base clip (three walks as well). He also stole a pair of bases during the week.
Arroyo recorded two hits in each of the four matchups. His week started with three RBIs and two runs scored in Friday’s opener. He then cleared the fence twice in Saturday’s first matchup, en route to six RBIs and four runs scored.
Arroyo’s week wrapped up with four more RBIs in the series finale. He also drew one walk and stole a base.
For the year, Arroyo is batting .363 (41-for-113) with four doubles, two triples, and five home runs. He has 38 RBIs to his credit and has scored 36 times. Seventeen walks have helped lift his on-base percentage to .464. The sophomore has stolen 10 bases as well.
The award is the first for WPU this year.
