Area Runners Participate In Honolulu Marathon

The Honolulu Marathon is held every year on the second Sunday of December, and some area residents made the journey to run in the annual event.
By 5 am, runners found their starting spots based upon the individuals estimation of how long it would take them to complete, with runners taking off from the Ala Moana Boulevard and Queen Street Extension.
$40,000 was the prize for the top finisher with second place earning $16,0000 and third $10,000. There were also prizes awarded in each age group, with those broke down into 5 year segments.
Kenya’s Nicholas Chelimo finished in a time of 2:14:55 for the top finisher in the mens division, with Ethopia’s Woynishet Girma finishing in 2:31:41. Chelimo also claimed a $2,000 bonus for finishing with a sub 2:15:00 time.
Locals that participated and their times are as follows; Tony Howard 4:18:42, Linda Adams 4:18:43, Bobby Opheim 4:33:21, Natalie Spray 4:45:29, Michelle Hynick 4:51:04, Jane Opheim 4:53:53, Geoff Oscarson 4:56:12, Leanne Bartlow 5:02:42, Jason Van Wyk, 5:14:20. There was a total of 10,191 male finishers and 9,114 female finishers.
Next years Honolulu Marathon is scheduled for Sunday, December 9, 2012.
