And the Band Plays On
Oskaloosa, Iowa- For Decades the Oskaloosa City Band has brought people to the downtown area for their weekly Thursday evening performances.
Hot popcorn and it’s aroma filled the square while drinks were being served by a cooler tricycle, all provided by local businesses, not to mention the snow cones. With over 150 people filling the square and the many many more sitting in the cars parked on the inside of the square, area residents welcomed back the Oskaloosa Tradition.
According to a release earlier in the day from the Oskaloosa City Band: The band is under the direction of Bruce Peiffer, Director of Bands at North Mahaska High School. The members of the band include: residents of Oskaloosa, New Sharon, and Sigourney; along with high school students from Oskaloosa and North Mahaska. The band will open and close the concert with Karl King military marches, published locally, by Barnhouse Publishing. Other selections this week include: “Tricinium” (Barnhouse Publishing), “Malaguena”, “The Great Escape”, “Songs of Scotland”, “A Whole New World” (from the Disney movie, “Aladdin”), Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline”, and “Trails of Glory”. The band will be playing old favorites, and a few new tunes as well.
Carole Comstock said the part she enjoys the most, “I like the music and the people.” She says that they have been coming to watch the band play for 30 years. “We enjoy it, we use to bring our boys up when they were little.”
As another selection comes to a close, those in the cars surrounding the square honk their horns in appreciation of yet another well played selection from the band.
Join them next week on the square for more music and entertainment. You might want to bring a blanket or a chair, as many times the benches in the park are filled early. The music starts at 8 p.m.
Don’t forget about this summers Junior Main Street showing of World War II videos staring Walter Cronkite in the Color of War. Those begin at 6:30 at the American Legion.
