A Night Of Improv For Oskaloosa Community Theater
Oskaloosa, Iowa – A little improv makes for challenging and fun theater.
Andy McGuire of Oskaloosa Community Theater [OCT] lead a group of interested improv performers this past week at On The Green restaurant in Oskaloosa.
Improv is short for improvisation, “and the art of improvisation is doing whatever the art is, without a script. In this case, we’ll be tackling theater, because no one want’s to hear me sing”, said McGuire.
McGuire had some short form improvisation planned for participants on Saturday night.
The desire is to continue building the group of performers into a cast of many once again, from the ground up. And this past weekend was the kickoff for what McGuire dubbed “A month of OCT”.
“We would like it to be a yearly sort of thing. OCTober happens every year”, said McGuire. “One of the things from the youth theater I hear from parents from time to time is, boy, I’d like to play some of these games that we play, and that they hear their kids talking about”.
McGuire said that the initial night took some cues from those requests. “You can interact as much as you feel comfortable”, said McGuire of the evening of improv. “If you want to participate, feel free to jump up and participate in some of the games. If you just want to watch, that’s fine too”,
“The core of what we’re really working on the past few years in rebuilding OCT ,has been putting the community at the heart of what OCT is. Theater is the tool to drive that community”, added McGuire.
OCT will be celebrating throughout the month, with the next event being at the Book Vault on the 15th of October, where a Murder Mystery will be played out. Seating for the event is limited, and tickets include a three-course meal catered by Grate Expectations. Cost is $30.00.
On OCTober 29th, at the Nelson Pioneer Farm, the group will host the ‘Haunted Village’ from 5 to 8pm. Cost is $5.00.
