Lady Statesmen Stave off Late Charge in 69-67 Win Over Graceland

Oskaloosa–Although it was a much different style of game than the first time the two programs met earlier this month, the winner remained the same as Penn defeated Graceland 69-67 in non-conference women’s basketball action Tuesday.

The Lady Statesmen (4-3) swept the season series against the Yellowjackets (4-3), but this time the teams combined for just 136 points, compared to the 187 points in a 106-81 Penn win in the season opener on November 1.

The home squad led the entire first stanza, holding a 38-29 edge at the break, but Graceland stormed out of intermission with 11 unanswered to claim its first and only lead at 40-38.

Penn then awoke from its halftime slumber, taking the advantage back and never trailing again.  The Lady Statesmen kept the margin to multiple possessions for the most part, but the Yellowjackets were able to sneak within two in the final seconds.

Christa Subbert (Sr., Stanton, Stanton HS), who led all players with a season-high 29 points (11-of-22 FG), was then fouled and went to the line to ice the win.  Unfortunately, she missed the front end of the one-and-one, but with too little time remaining, Graceland could not get a game-winning shot off before the horn sounded.

Penn outshot Graceland 46.6%-40.8% and held a 43-36 edge on the boards, led by 13 from Rachel Butler (Sr., Orange County, Calif., Cerritos CC).  Butler added 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting as her and Subbert combined to account for exactly 2/3 of their team’s scoring (46 of 69).  For Butler, it was her third double-double of the season.

Sarah Martin (So., Anthem, Ariz., Boulder Creek HS) and Samantha Darley (Sr., Gilbert, Ariz., Mesa CC) added six points each, while Orielle Thomas (Fr., Waynesville, Mo., Waynesville HS) hit double figures in rebounds with ten.

Four different players had three assists, while Martin paced the hosts with two steals.

Penn overcame a 25-17 deficit in turnovers by performing much better at the charity stripe (10-of-15, while Graceland was just 1-of-7).

Next: Penn travels to Orange City this weekend to compete in the Northwestern Classic.  Penn meets Dordt Friday at 4 p.m. and then takes on #1 Northwestern Saturday at 4 p.m.

Hambrite Goes Off for 31 in Statesmen Loss to Dordt
Sioux Center–Huzie Hambrite (Jr., Indianapolis, Ind., Ball State) flexed his muscles throughout the night, but his performance could not make up for a blistering show put on by the hosts as the Penn men’s basketball team fell 106-97 to Dordt in non-conference play Tuesday.

Penn (6-3) was outshot 59.3%-41.9% and fell behind 58-40 at the break.  The visitors cut the deficit in half with a 57-48 second-stanza scoring edge, but it was not enough to extend the team’s winning streak, which is snapped at three games.

The Statesmen shot very well from the line (21-of-26), but had many fewer chances compared to the Defenders (34-of-47).

Penn was better with ball control, committing 15 turnovers compared to the 24 by Dordt (5-4), leading to a 35-17 edge in points off mistakes.

Despite being outrebounded 41-39, the visitors owned a 16-5 edge in second-chance points.

Hambrite was 11-of-21 from the field and a perfect 9-of-9 at the charity stripe.

Nick Coffey (Sr., Hinsdale, Ill., Hinsdale Central HS) added 14 points, while Blake Walker (Fr., Smyrna, Ga., Campbell HS) also surpassed the double-digit marker with ten points.

Alan Douglas (Jr., Champaign, Ill., Lakeland CC) and Boris Bobic (Sr., Subotica, Serbia, Lakeland CC) contributed nine apiece and A.J. Rogers (So., Patoka, Ind., Princeton HS) finished with eight.

Hambrite and Adam Hodge (Jr., South Elgin, Ill., Rock Valley CC) dished out two assists each, while four separate individuals had two steals in the setback.

Next: Penn travels to Hastings, Neb. this weekend to compete in the Hastings Classic.  The Statesmen meet Doane (Neb.) Friday at 8 p.m. and then take on host Hastings Saturday at 4 p.m.
