Three in Top Eight as Statesmen Win Silver Again
St. Paul, Minn.–A great team effort helped the Penn men’s bowling team again place second, this time at the Minnesota Invitational last Saturday and Sunday.
As a team, Penn was second out of 17 teams with 12,199 pins in six regular games and 28 Baker games.
Minnesota State-Mankato won the team crown with 12,487 pins as it and Penn were the only teams over the 12,000-pin tally. The next closest team was North Dakota State with just 11,369 pins. Jon Lippert of Minnesota State-Mankato won the individual title with a 243.7 average (1,462 pins).
Andrew Zaug (So., Waverly, Waverly-Shell Rock HS) topped the Statesmen in third place (out of 105 competitors) with a 235.2 average (1,411 pins). He started slow with a 161, but then reeled off five straight games of 235 or more, including a school record and career best of 276.
The score is one pin better than the previous record of 275 by James Miller (Sr., Oswego, Ill., Vincennes) from last year.
Sean Rangel (So., Omaha, Neb., Bellevue East HS) was right behind him in fourth with a 226.3 average, while Drew Balta (Fr., Walford, Cedar Rapids Prairie HS) was also in the top ten, placing eighth with a 210.8 clip.
Cameron Foster (Fr., West Jordan, Utah, West Jordan HS) finished just outside the top ten, taking 13th with a 207.7 average. All four athletes started all six games.
Piet Schaeffer (Fr., Livingston, Scotland, The James Young HS) averaged over 200 as well, owning a 212.8 mark in five games (43rd place), while Miller rounded out the top team’s scoring in 105th, bowling a 153 in his lone game.
Kyle Clark (Fr., Oswego, Ill., Yorkville HS) headlined the ‘B’ team effort as Penn’s second squad placed eighth with 10,740 pins. Clark was fifth overall with a 221.8 average.
Nathan Namanny (So., Denison, Denison HS) was four notches behind him in ninth with a 210.7 average, while Kyle Hammann (Jr., Knoxville, Knoxville HS) also started all six games with a 199.2 mark (24th place).
Tyler Buckner (So., Fontanelle, Nodaway Valley HS) was 59th with a 180.8 average in five games. Mackenzie Van Zante (Fr., Pella, Pella HS) averaged 154.6 pins in five games to finish 76th and Jared Turner (So., Knoxville, Knoxville HS) ended his day 99th with a 130.5 clip in two games.
