Bowling Teams in Action Over the Weekend
Statesmen Take Runner-Up Trophy at Warhawk Open
Madison, Wis.–The Penn men’s bowling program nearly collected its first-ever team crown as it finished high at the Warhawk Open hosted by Wisconsin-Whitewater last Saturday and Sunday.
As a team, Penn placed second out of 30 teams with 9,284 pins in six regular games and 16 Baker games. The finish is the highest in program history, eclipsing last year’s third-place finish at the Minnesota Invitational.
Rock Valley CC (Ill.) held off Penn by just 69 pins, winning the tournament with 9,353 pins. Ryan Kohlmeyer of Wisconsin-Milwaukee won the individual title with a 229.0 average (1,374 pins).
Sean Rangel (So., Omaha, Neb., Bellevue East HS) led the Statesmen cause in 11th place with an average of 209.8 (1,259 pins). All five players on the ‘A’ team bowled all six games.
Drew Balta (Fr., Walford, Cedar Rapids Prairie HS) was right on his heels for top bowler status, averaging 207.7 pins. James Miller (Sr., Oswego, Ill., Vincennes) also averaged over 200, holding a 200.5 clip, while Cameron Foster (Fr., West Jordan, Utah, West Jordan HS) notched a 195.8 average.
Piet Schaeffer (Fr., Livingston, Scotland, The James Young HS) rounded out the top team’s scoring, averaging 187.5 pins.
Penn also had a B team in competition and the squad placed 18th with 8,541 pins. Kyle Clark (Fr., Oswego, Ill., Yorkville HS) headed the team with a 206.5 average in six games.
Three others also started in all six games, including Ethan Noble (Fr., Cedar Rapids, Cedar Rapids Washington HS) with a 178.2 average, Nathan Namanny (So., Denison, Denison HS) with a 176.2 average, and Mackenzie Van Zante (Fr., Pella, Pella HS) with a 174.0 average.
Kyle Hammann (Jr., Knoxville, Knoxville HS) competed in four games, owning a 179.0 average, while Eric Smith (So., Glenwood, Glenwood HS) started two games with a 150.0 clip.
Next: Penn travels to Minneapolis, Minn. for the Minnesota Invitational this Saturday and Sunday.
Kilts Leads Lady Statesmen to Fourth Place
Madison, Wis.–A solid team effort netted the best finish in program history as the Penn women’s bowling team competed at the Warhawk Open hosted by Wisconsin-Whitewater last Saturday and Sunday.
As a team, Penn placed fourth out of 20 teams with 8,160 pins in six regular games and 16 Baker games. The finish is the highest in program history, eclipsing last year’s fifth-place finish at the Mid-States Tournament.
Robert Morris’ (Ill.) Gold team won the crown with 8,630 pins, defeating its next closest opponent, Midland (Neb.), by 333 pins. Brooke Peterson of Illinois won the individual title with a 198.2 average (1,189 pins).
Amanda Kilts (Fr., Cedar Rapids, Cedar Rapids Jefferson HS) guided the Lady Statesmen in 16th place with a 178.5 average in six games (1,071 pins).
Breanne Underwood (Sr., Treynor, Treynor HS) was next for Penn with a 170.0 average in six games. Samantha Powell (So., Herriman, Utah, Bingham HS) also bowled in all six games, posting a 163.0 average at the tourney.
Amanda Edenholm (So., Marysville, Wash., Marysville-Pilchuck HS) averaged 170.8 pins in five games, while Kirstin Newberry (So., Holland, Mich., West Ottawa HS) had a 159.2 clip in five games.
Abilgayle Wempen (So., Titonka, North Iowa HS) averaged 160.5 pins in two games to round out the team’s efforts.
