Oskaloosa Bowling Teams Beat Sigourney, Boys Stay Undefeated

The Oskaloosa boys and girls bowling teams both earned wins over Sigourney on Saturday.

With the victory, the Oskaloosa boys stayed undefeated and improved to 7-0 on the season. The girls also picked up the win and are now 6-2 on the year.

The Oskaloosa boys were tested again but found a way to come out on top in another close meet. Oskaloosa bowled well during the singles portion and carried a 61-pin lead into the five-game Baker format. Sigourney made a strong push and took the lead after bowling a 246 in the fourth Baker game, putting Oskaloosa down by nine pins going into the final game.

The Indians responded under pressure, rolling a 217 in the final Baker game to pull away for a 30-pin win. Coaches Tony Witt and Adam Dubois encouraged the team before the Baker games to stay focused and make quality shots, and the boys responded when it mattered most. The win continues Oskaloosa’s back-to-back undefeated regular season streaks after finishing last season 11-0. The team now turns its focus to defending its conference title.

Individually, the boys were led by Kyle McHawes, who rolled the high two-game series of the meet with a 469, including games of 223 and 246. Cole VanderWal recorded the second-highest two-game series with a 425, while Marshall Seibert followed with a 414 series. Cale Armbruster added a 212 game as the entire lineup contributed to the team win.

The Oskaloosa girls bowled their best team series of the season in their win over Sigourney and continue to improve with each meet.

Senior Sidney Thompson led the girls with the high game of 234 and the top two-game series of 391. Thompson is averaging 190 on the season. Regan Abrahamson posted the second-highest two-game series with a 362 and rolled consistent games of 184 and 178. Faith Carmer added her best two-game series of the season with a 355 and recorded her highest game of the year with a 200.

The Oskaloosa girls will look to defend their conference title on Monday in Newton as they attempt to win the championship for the second straight season.

The Oskaloosa boys junior varsity teams also had strong performances. Freshman Jace Armbruster led the JV teams with his best two-game series of the season at 419, including games of 231 and 188.
