Batterson, Giger Collect October POM Awards

Oskaloosa–The William Penn University Athletics Booster Club has announced the recipients of October’s Player of the Month awards.

Senior football player Jacob Batterson (Eddyville, Iowa, Industrial Technology) won the Male award, while sophomore volleyball player Kylie Giger (Elkhart, Ind., Exercise Science) collected the Female honor.

A free safety, Batterson tallied 32 tackles (20 solos, 12 assists) in four games for the Statesmen. He also posted one interception, two pass breakups, and three blocked kicks. A return specialist, the senior took one kickoff back 85 yards for a touchdown. He averaged 23.4 yards per kickoff return (seven returns) and 22 yards on one punt return.

It is the second time Batterson has been honored as a Booster Club Player of the Month, also receiving the first-ever honor last November.

Giger, a first-time Player of the Month, guided the Statesmen volleyball team during October. She was successful on both ends with 97 kills and 32 blocks in 15 matches. The sophomore, who had a .142 attack percentage, also managed seven assists, 13 aces, and 65 digs.

Bandy Earns First POW Honor of 2013

Oskaloosa–A healthy Mason Bandy (Jr., Calgary, Alberta, Biology) made a huge impact to keep his team’s season alive, and his efforts earned him Midwest Collegiate Conference Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week honors Monday.

Bandy, a first-time honoree this fall (fourth of his career), was integral in helping William Penn (10-7-2) advance to the league tournament semifinals with a 4-3 shootout win over #4 seed Mount Mercy.

The junior made six saves in regulation, highlighted by three in the second half. With the navy and gold leading by one entering the bottom half of the shootout’s final round, he then dove to his right to stop the equalizer and send WPU to a semifinal rematch with #2 nationally-ranked Grand View.

Bandy, who has battled injuries much of the year, made just his fifth start of the season Sunday. For the year, he is 2-2-1 with a 1.63 Goals Against Average and one shutout. The junior has saved 20 shots.

It is the third award of the year for William Penn.

Campos, Breeher Collect First MCC Laurels

Oskaloosa–A pair of Statesmen netters were strong in last week’s action to earn Midwest Collegiate Conference Volleyball Player of the Week honors Monday.

Kristal Campos (Jr., Lancaster, Calif., Sociology) was named MCC Hitter of the Week, while
Danielle Breeher (So., St. Louis, Mo., Undecided) garnered the league’s Libero of the Week award. The awards are the first for both players.

Campos, highlighted by a 13-kill performance (.667 hitting percentage) against AIB last Tuesday, finished the week with 33 kills (3.00 per set) and a .338 attack clip. She also had one assist, seven digs, and four blocks (one solo, three assists).

For the year, she has 317 kills with a .158 hitting percentage. She has also posted ten assists, 13 aces, 202 digs, and 29 blocks (seven solo, 22 assists).

Breeher tallied 50 digs (4.55 per set) last week, including a high of 22 in Tuesday’s victory. For the year, she leads WPU (15-28, 1-4 MCC) with 641 digs in addition to three kills, 64 assists, and 33 aces.

William Penn has now notched three weekly accolades in 2013.

Batterson, Kerrigan Tabbed for Weekly Recognition

Oskaloosa–Marcus Kerrigan (Sr., Cary, Ill., Sociology) and Jacob Batterson (Sr., Eddyville, Iowa, Industrial Technology) were major members of the Statesmen football team’s win last weekend and they were rewarded for their play by being named Midwest League Players of the Week honors Monday.

Kerrigan earned his third Special Teams POW honor (13th of his career), while Batterson was named Defensive POW for the second time this year (fourth of his career) as William Penn (4-5, 2-2 MWL) rallied to defeat Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) 17-13 Saturday.

Kerrigan accounted for five Statesmen points, highlighted by a 47-yard field goal. He also punted twice for a 35.5-yard average (long of 42) and kicked off four times (54.5-yard average).

For the year, Kerrigan has tallied 42 points, going 21-for-24 in extra points and 7-for-15 in field goals. The senior is averaging 37.3 yards per punt (19 attempts) and 56.5 yards per kickoff (39 attempts).

Batterson’s defensive effort led WPU to limit the Tigers to just 173 yards of offense. He was one of three players with a team-best eight tackles (five solos, one for loss) in addition to an interception.

For the year, Batterson has 55 tackles (34 solos, 21 assists), including two for loss. The senior has posted two interceptions, four pass breakups, and one forced fumble. He has also blocked three kicks, and as a kickoff returner has an average of 24.3 yards, including a touchdown of 85 yards.

William Penn has now notched six weekly accolades in 2013.
