Zombie Outbreak At William Penn

Josh Shutting (back) is seen here with two captured “zombies” Wednesday as he helped to inform players of the rules and game play.
Oskaloosa, Iowa – The infectious disease that created hoards of zombies that overwhelmed the campus of William Penn University on October 1st of 2012 culminated in the last surviving human seen running across the lawn at Penn, being chased by 99 ravenous Zombies. Or at least that is how the history books may describe the events that are set to take place on campus.
Statesmen vs. Zombies will officially kick off on October 1st, but until then, students will be stocking (pun intended) on socks, and nerf weapons to stun the invading hoard. Yes, you can stun a Zombie with your sock for at least 15 minutes, maybe longer if it smells really bad, but please don’t include rocks or anything else in that sock as it may break the skin open, spreading the virus further. Just a bit of humor with that, but promoters do ask that participants only use the sock, nothing else in it.
Josh Shutting, who coordinates activities for the William Penn Computer Club, said the idea for sponsoring the event grew from a simple conversation. Penn isn’t the first college to host such an event, and Shutting is utilizing resources that have already been built. They are utilizing HvZ Source to aid in the event.
The infected sole who’s identity is still currently unknown will break free to contaminate its first victims because, if not fed every 48 hours, it will die. This is just one of the rules of the game. All participants, which is currently being limited to students and facility, have to abide by all the rules during play. Another example includes safe zones, such as being in class, athletic or other school sanctioned events or academic areas. The complete list of rules can be found on the registration website.
The turn out at the PAC Café was larger than really planned for and, if all goes well, the winner could walk away with a shiny new iPad. You can keep up with all the Zombie action on their Facebook page HERE.
