YMCA Kicks Off Annual Scholarship Campaign
Oskaloosa, Iowa – Dawn Collins, Mahaska County YMCA Executive Director, has announced the Mahaska County YMCA will kick off its annual scholarship campaign with the second annual “No Show Black Tie Dinner Fundraiser.” Invitations will be distributed by YMCA board members and campaign volunteers within the next few weeks. The only date required to be entered into personal calendars will be a ‘give by’ date, because attendance to a fundraising event will not be necessary.
“As the invitation reads, this is ‘a make-believe event for a very real cause,’” said Madonna Bowie, Campaign Chair. “The Mahaska County YMCA Board of Directors values people’s time and money, and this unique ‘non-event’ will provide an opportunity for residents to give at comfortable levels without having to attend an event during this very busy time of year.”
“It is really an investment in the Mahaska Community,” said Bowie, “because donations fund sustainable, long-term proven programs for families within the county. The community commitment to fund scholarships at the Y has been a long standing tradition locally and nationwide. In our community it has been known as Share In Youth, Strong Kids, and for now, the Annual Scholarship Campaign.
The Y’s goal this year is to raise $25,000 for scholarships from community members. The Y has already completed their Friends of the Y campaign with the business community and raised almost $100,000. In addition to supporting scholarships, those funds also assisted various capital improvements and support for program operations. The YMCA spends over $50,000 annually on scholarships for families and youth in need.
“This is a chance to make a direct impact on people’s lives.” added Collins. “For example, we had two youth in need of scholarships while their mothers were undergoing cancer treatment. A gentleman was referred to us by MHP after having a heart attack. A woman diagnosed with diabetes and obesity was referred to us with a prescription for water aerobics. Funds raised are critical as we continue to ensure our facilities and programs are available to everyone in our community regardless of their ability to pay.” Support of the Y efforts and programs is more than just recreation, it serves as the foundation upon which a committed and strong community is constructed. When we each contribute to the Annual Scholarship Campaign, we choose to accept our role in helping our community grow healthier and better together.
