YMCA Gymnastics Program Changes
Oskaloosa, Iowa – The Mahaska County YMCA has been serving the Mahaska Community since 1903, and throughout that time, the Y’s staff and Board of Directors have addressed many changes, some implemented by a desire to improve, some implemented out of necessity due to unplanned situations.
“We have received notification from our Gymnastics Coach and Director, Meghan Slay, of her plans to resign from the Y’s employment after over 20 years of coaching students in both competitive and recreational gymnastics programs,” said YMCA Executive Director Dawn Collins. “We wish Ms. Slay the best in her continuing endeavors. The Y will immediately begin a nation-wide search for her replacement, and it is our intent to have a new director and coach in place by the beginning of the next gymnastics session.”
Gymnastics is an important program offered by YMCAs nationally. Children develop self-confidence while improving their flexibility, balance, and strength. It is an important foundation for youth before they go on to team sports or as an activity in-between team sport seasons. The Mahaska County YMCA serves over 200 community youth every year through recreational gymnastics and the Aerials competitive team.
Collins indicated Slay will continue her instruction at the Y through the end of the gymnastics spring term. Her last day will be May 25. Those with questions regarding the gymnastics program and progress regarding the hiring of a new coach should be directed to Collins at the Y, 641.673.8411.
