Oskaloosa, Iowa – A delightful winter day welcomed veterans to the war memorial inside Forest Cemetery on Saturday morning.

Veterans honored their fallen comrades, prisoners of war, missing in action and all of those who honorably served their country in the armed forces of the United States.

The same ceremony was carried out across the United States at over 1100 memorial sites like Forest Cemetery to remember, honor and teach.

“Today, we show a united front of gratitude and respect across the United States of America as we remember the fallen, honor those who serve and teach our children the value of freedom.”

The wreath at the base of the monument to veterans is more than a decoration, it is an acknowledgment of the sacrifice, and serves as a connection between those present and those who have gone before.

Wreaths were placed for every branch of service and another to remember those who never made it home.

The ceremony ended with the playing of taps, and the gathering then dispersed.
