Clinton–A strong fight was given by the Statesmen women’s soccer team against #24 Ashford Tuesday, but it was not enough in a 2-0 non-conference setback.

William Penn (5-6) was outshot 15-4, but went into halftime in a scoreless tie with the Saints (9-2).

The hosts unfortunately finally broke through in the early minutes of the second stanza, and then added another tally in the 81st minute.

Adriana Borjon (Jr., Willits, Calif., Exercise Science) posted 11 saves in the loss.

“Today was a tough one,” Head Coach Willie McGowan said. “I am not sure if we gave Ashford a little too much respect or if our effort was lacking a little as it seemed we were second to every ball today and did not play as well as we know we can. Both teams started off very slowly and if we had have been able to kick it up a gear or two early on the game could have had a different outcome. As it was, we were undone by some good play for the first goal and a set piece for the second.”

Next Up: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa Saturday to host MidAmerica Nazarene in Heart of America Athletic Conference action at 1 p.m.
