WPU Captures Runner-Up Finish to Open Spring Season

Maryville, Mo.–The Statesmen men’s golf team began its spring season with a runner-up placement in the Graceland University Spring Invitational Friday and Saturday.

The two-day event, which was plagued with high winds and cold temperatures, saw William Penn finish second out of seven teams with a total of 663 (336-327). Southwestern CC took home the team title at 656 (332-324), while its own Aidan Rooke won medalist honors with a score of 159 (80-79).

Jordan Lester (Grad., Lamoni, Iowa, Sports Management) claimed home a runner-up finish, signing for a 161 (83-78). Rounding out a trio of top-10 finishes was Spencer Tucker (Sr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Sports Manangement) (85-82–167) and Austin Hafner (Jr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Sports Management) (86-83–169).

Jonathan Jarvis (Jr., Burlington, Iowa, Business Management) was the leading Statesmen after round one, posting an 82 throughout the tough conditions. Jarvis struggled the second day and would finish at an overall 169 (82-87). Rounding out the varsity squad was Cameron Johnson (Jr., Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Business Management) who turned in a 172 (88-84).

“This tournament showed how gritty this team can be,” said Head Coach Steve Tucker. “The guys could have laid down and given up but they showed they had fight. The wind was difficult to manage but we ended up adapting.”

Up Next: The Statesmen will travel to Fort Madison next Tuesday to compete in the Iowa Wesleyan Invitational.
