WPU Again Fourth in League Cup Standings
Oskaloosa–Titles by three programs assisted the Statesmen athletics department to another fourth-place finish as the 2013-2014 Midwest Collegiate Conference’s Commissioner’s Cup Standings were released.
All 17 of the league’s sponsored sports have determined their champions and points have been awarded for finishes in the final regular season standings or finishes in the league’s championship event. Bonus points were also awarded to conference tournament winners.
The MCC sponsors men’s soccer, women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s cross country, women’s cross country, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s indoor track & field, women’s indoor track & field, men’s bowling, women’s bowling, baseball, softball, men’s golf, women’s golf, men’s outdoor track & field, and women’s outdoor track & field.
William Penn earned 590 points to place fourth out of seven teams, highlighted by titles in men’s bowling, softball, and women’s golf. Men’s basketball (second) and men’s indoor and outdoor track and field (both third) also ended their campaigns in the top half of the MCC. It is the second year in a row that WPU has finished directly in the middle of the pack.
St. Ambrose dethroned four-time defending champion Grand View by claiming six championships, including crowns in women’s cross country, women’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, women’s indoor track and field, and women’s outdoor track and field.
Grand View was right behind SAU with 870 points and six titles of its own (men’s soccer, volleyball, women’s bowling, men’s indoor track and field, men’s golf, and men’s outdoor track and field).
Mount Mercy was third with 660 points (title in men’s cross country). Clarke was without a crown, but still finished fifth (565 points), while Viterbo took home the baseball title en route to sixth place (495 points). AIB, which only sponsors 11 sports, had a respectable 290 points to round out the standings.
