Women’s Soccer Shut Out at Ottawa
Ottawa, Kan.–The Statesmen women’s soccer squad performed well defensively, but the offense was unable to follow suit as the navy and gold fell 1-0 to Ottawa in non-conference action Saturday.
William Penn (0-3) was outshot just 15-9, but could not stop the host Braves (1-2) from finally breaking through at the 50:23 mark.
Alyce Correia (Fr., Perth, Australia, Elementary Education) and Emmanuela Meneide (Sr., Turks and Caicos, Biology) paced the WPU offense with three shots each, while Savannah Padilla (Fr., Mesa, Ariz., Sociology) also had multiple attempts (2).
Laura Gentry (Sr., Fruitland, Idaho, Physical Education) stopped four shots in suffering the loss. Kayla Benoit (Fr., St. Louis, Mo., Business Management) also managed a save off the bench.
“I felt like we played well enough to win today against a solid Ottawa team,” Head Coach Willie McGowan said. “Our defense and midfield were very strong on both sides of the ball, but sadly injuries and tiredness due to the heat hurt us today at key times in the match.”
“Our offense is creating chances, but we have not yet found our rhythm to finish them off,” McGowan added. “The effort was there again today and we will have to dig deep again for tomorrow’s game against Avila.”
