Oskaloosa–The Statesmen men’s soccer team controlled much of its non-conference matchup with non-conference rival Central, but that did not translate into a victory as William Penn fell 2-1 Tuesday.

The Statesmen (10-6-1), who were seeking to tie the program’s single-season record for wins, outshot the Dutch (9-6-1) by a tally of 19-8.

The visitors were the first to get on the board with a goal in the 13th minute, but the hosts answered just over five minutes later. Facundo Manzanares (Fr., Cordoba, Argentina, Business Management) recorded his fourth goal of the year at the 17:44 mark with an assist credited to David Nega (Jr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Undecided). It was Nega’s third ‘helper’ of the fall.

Unfortunately, it was Central that had the final say with the eventual game-winner just 2:12 into the second half.

Angelo Kelly (So., Ottumwa, Iowa, Physical Education) posted a game-high six shots, while Cem Olgar (Fr., Duesseldorf, Germany, Industrial Technology) added four more attempts.

Next: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa Saturday to host MCC rival Grand View in its regular season finale at 3 p.m. The game will also serve as Senior Day.
