William Penn Defeats Division II Truman 27-16
Kirksville, Mo.–Courtesy of four bonus-point wins and a victory in a match highlighting two ranked grapplers, the Statesmen wrestling team pulled out a 27-16 dual meet win over NCAA Division II Truman Tuesday.
William Penn (2-5) had its collective hand raised at six weights and never trailed against the Bulldogs (2-7).
Isaiah Mayorquin (Fr., Yuma, Ariz., Cibola HS) got the visitors on top early with a 4-3 win over Tyler Schilson at 125 pounds.
133-pounder Eric Van Wagoner (Fr., Portland, Ore., Westview HS) tripled his team’s point total with a fall in just 44 seconds against Dan Karlskin.
The 141-pound matchup narrowly went to Truman, but top-ranked Eric Burgey (So., Easton, Pa., Easton HS) returned the favor at 149 pounds with a 5-2 decision over #6 Ryan Maus.
The Bulldogs claimed the next two contests, pulling to within one.
That would be all the closer the hosts would get as Joe Sumner (So., Delaware, Ohio, Rutherford B. Hayes HS) dominated Sean Brown with a 16-1 technical fall at 174 pounds.
Kyle Soderblom (Fr., Newton, Lynnville-Sully HS) extended the advantage to 21-11 at 184 pounds in defeating Zach Hayes by major decision, 10-1.
The margin was split in half, however, with a technical fall ‘W’ by Truman at 197, but Kory Morrow (So., Oskaloosa, Wartburg) closed the door for good with an evening-best 43-second pin of Thomas Redmond at heavyweight.
Next: William Penn travels to Des Moines Saturday to compete in the Grand View Open.
